As part of the oPEN Lab project in Rochapea (Pamplona), the neighbourhood is preparing for the creation of three new collaborative murals. These murals will integrate creativity, citizen participation, and social innovation.
The beginning of new collaborative murals and the involvement of educational institutions
In November, the driving group of the project, with the participation of local schools (Cardenal Ilundain, Escolapios La Compasión, Patxi Larrainzar, and Rochapea) met. They defined the three new walls to be worked on, as well as to establish the thematic lines for each of the murals.
This initiative continues the trajectory started earlier this year, when the first collaborative mural was created on the wall of the fronton at Colegio Escolapios La Compasión. After an initial sketch, three workshops were held between February and April to design the final artwork. Finally, on 10th May, the mural painting began, a collective effort that contextualised the story of the neighbourhood, “reconstructing its history” through a timeline guided by the river Arga.
The mural as a representation of the past, present, and future
The mural represents three key stages: the past, the present, and the future. To begin with, the past is depicted in muted colours, with women as washerwomen and orchard workers, essential to life’s foundation. Next, the present, located at the centre of the mural, reflects the social changes of the 1980s, with a balance between women and men, and an environment shaped by urban development. Finally, the future shows a more sustainable, inclusive, and egalitarian neighbourhood.
On 25th June 2024, this first mural was officially inaugurated on the Paseo de los Enamorados. This event marked a perfect conclusion to this first phase of co-creation, where excitement, joy, and a positive atmosphere filled the spirit of all those involved. With three new collaborative murals underway, the Rochapea Living Lab continues to demonstrate how creativity, citizen participation, and social innovation transform spaces and connect people.
At CAVIAR UPV/EHU, we encourage you to be part of this process. In the coming weeks, we will keep you updated on the progress of these three new collaborative murals. Don’t miss out!
