Academic background
Xabier Barrutieta (San Sebastián 1978) is an architect who received the Final Degree Award from the San Sebastián School of Architecture in 2003. He has made stays abroad such as the Erasmus course at the Universität Stuttgart in Germany and the Master in Territory Design by the Universitá della Svizzera Italiana in Medrisio, Switzerland. After completing the PhD courses, he obtained the Advanced Studies Diploma in 2006 presenting a research dissertation on climate, sustainability and industrialized construction together with a web application that was awarded at the Arquia Awards of the Caja de Arquitectos for Very Young Spanish Architects. He is currently a PhD student in the PhD Program Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Architecture and Engineering at the EHU.
Research experience
He has been a contracted researcher of the national project Active Ventilated Facades. He is part of the CAVIAR research group and has participated in various research projects related to NZEBs. His projected and built work has been awarded, among others, in the Europan10 international competition for the Teruel Fusión project, and in the Egurtek Basque Quality Awards for the use of wood and in the Lamp Lighting Awards for the work of the Reform and Comprehensive rehabilitation of the Church of Santa Maria la Real de Soraluze.
He is the architect who designed the Orona Ideo project in Hernani, which has 50,000m2, in which he has directed the architecture and integrated management of the project. This project has been internationally recognized as a practical example of a Nearly Zero Energy Building and was selected as a success story for the World Green Building Council’s Architecture, Health and Wellbeing report. He was selected to represent Spain at the 2015 Green Building Solutions Awards. He also has several projects and works that have been widely published in specialized magazines.
Teaching experience
He has been an honorary professor of the ETSASS Projects III subject and currently teaches part-time trilingual teaching in the degrees of Architecture and Technical Architecture in the subjects of Construction, Industrialized Construction and Innovation Management. He has participated as a teacher in Masters and Courses in various European countries, and has been invited as a speaker on Sustainability by the architects’ associations of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Professional experience
During more than 15 years of professional career, he has carried out projects and collaborations with numerous architecture firms, public and private organizations. He has worked in territorial planning for the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, has been Head of R&D in urban planning at ah&asociados in Pamplona, and also Director of Urban and Landscape Design at the Madrid Metropolis Foundation, collaborating on successful projects with international offices such as Foster +Partners and Arup. From his own office in San Sebastián, he carries out unique projects in the fields of architecture, urban planning and eco-technologies. His work has been recognized at the Build Architecture Awards – Basque Country as Architect of the Year 2016 and Most innovative architecture office 2018.
