Rochapea Students Lead a Community Initiative to Promote the Conservation of Neighbourhood Birds through the ROTXAPIA App

As part of the Txio Txio project, in collaboration with the oPEN Lab project, the neighbourhood of Rochapea in Pamplona has launched an innovative educational and environmental programme aimed at studying and slowing the decline of bird diversity in the area. The programme, currently being implemented in the Cardenal Ilundain and La Compasión Escolapios schools, actively involves both students and teachers. It promotes educational activities, local nature excursions, and the development of the ROTXAPIA app, a digital tool designed to help people learn about and care for the local birdlife.

Project Launch

In January 2025, the project was launched with a training session led by ornithologist Daniel García Mina, who explained how human activity impacts bird populations. He also proposed key strategies for their recovery, such as increasing green spaces, installing nest boxes, and implementing other measures that promote favourable habitats.

Exploring Rochapea to Discover the Neighbourhood’s Birdlife

Through outings to various parts of the neighbourhood, students have had the opportunity to identify local birds, observe their behaviours, and enjoy a day of discovery in contact with urban nature. These activities have helped spark curiosity and environmental awareness among the students, while also encouraging hands-on learning outside the classroom.

ROTXAPIA: An App to Identify Birds, Their Calls, and Much More

In March, the 4th-year Secondary School students from La Compasión Escolapios School took the first step in developing the ROTXAPIA app, a digital tool that will allow users to identify the neighbourhood’s birds, recognise their calls, and access relevant information about each species.

The app development session was an enriching experience, where creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm for the natural environment stood out. ROTXAPIA is envisioned as an educational, technological, and environmental tool, designed for the whole community.
