From 8th to 16th November, Artajona became the setting for a variety of educational activities as part of the European project FOOD FOREST, focused on developing a business model for Food Forests as a sustainable alternative for food production. This initiative aims to promote hands-on learning about permaculture and sustainability, engaging students, teachers, and the wider community.
Introductory, Advanced, and Teacher Training Courses
On 8th and 9th November, introductory and advanced courses on food forests and permaculture were held, delivered by Rakesh Rootsman Rak from Roots n Permaculture.
Additionally, from 10th to 13th November, a specific teacher training course was offered, aimed at transferring this knowledge to classrooms and promoting environmental education within the community.
David Beriain School Students Learn through Play
On 14th November, children from David Beriain Public School took part in practical activities in the Artajona Food Forest. They worked on the forest’s ponds, moving water and helping to naturally waterproof their bases. They also contributed to creating a path connecting the south and north of the forest, facilitating nutrient flow to the underground fungi, which will in the future strengthen tree growth and overall ecosystem health.

Soil Sampling Sessions Open to the Public
Finally, on 14th, 15th, and 16th November, members of the public were able to participate in soil sampling sessions in the forest. Participants collected samples, analysed colour, texture, and depth, measured pH and levels of nitrates, phosphates, and potash (NPK), and assessed the soil’s filtration capacity. These activities promoted practical learning about natural cycles and ecosystem interconnections.
Due to weather conditions, some sampling sessions could not be held during the last weekend, so new sessions have been scheduled for 13th and 14th December, open to all members of the public, to complete the practical training and participation in the project.
